Start a regular, moderate exercise program. If you are already doing an exercise program that meets our guidelines congratulate yourself for having this part of your healthy lifestyle in place. If you still want to lose some weight, just go ahead with the other steps.

If you have not started an exercise program now is a good time, especially if you are serious about losing weight. We know that some of the commercial programs boast that their approaches involve 'no exercise'. But we think that shows both their ignorance of the research into overweight and their desire to lure more customers. For all the reasons we explained earlier, you are unlikely to lose weight permanently and healthily unless you are exercising regularly. Regular moderate exercise will help to keep your RMR up and that makes it much easier for you to lose weight and keep it off. But, as you will learn shortly, the timing of your exercise also plays a key role in our program, by helping you get around some of the problems in fat physiology we discussed in the last unit.
