How Long Should Exercise

Most experts agree that every person should incorporate twenty to thirty minutes of aerobic activity into their daily lives, three or more times each week, along with a program of muscle conditioning and strengthening at least two times each week.

Are you meeting recommended daily requirements? Or do you consider yourself more of a computer-couch potato? We are all guilty of it at times, and there's nothing wrong with occasional inactivity. Sitting on the couch or in front of the computer keeps your body sedentary and at a low activity level. It might do your mind some good, but it doesn't do much for your body. Try these tips for adding more movement into your otherwise lazy body.

What time of the day is best to exercise?

There is no specific time of day that is more beneficial than another—whatever works best for your schedule is best for you. Most people do prefer to exercise first thing in the morning, as this allows them to "get it over with" in case other duties or tiredness sets in later in the day or evening.

While watching TV, do the following stretches and/or exercises:

    • Sit on the floor and stretch your legs and arms (without bouncing).
    • Ride a stationary bike, walk on a treadmill, step up and down, or just walk in place.
    • Jump rope or run in place during commercials.

While working on the computer:

    • Stretch, flex, and point your legs, feet, and toes.
    • Reach your arms as high as you can every fifteen minutes or after each typed page.
    • Roll your shoulders, turning your head from side to side.
    • Stretch and massage your fingers and palms every thirty minutes or so.

These activities don't take the place of an active lifestyle, but they surely can help.
