Reasons to become a vegetarian are quite varied. Some people choose this lifestyle to avoid "eating animals." They feel it is not humane, or do so for religious reasons. Others believe in saving the environment, and still others find it to be a healthier way of life. Food guidelines that encourage people to consume high-fiber, low-fat diets that include many sources of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables and less fat from meat and dairy products can also push individuals into this eating approach.An estimated 14 million Americans currently consider themselves as following a vegetarian lifestyle, with another million joining these food patterns each year.
