Water And Weight Reduction

What about Water?

Water is an essential nutrient, just like protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. It plays a vital role in health and is quite necessary for survival. In fact, without water a person could only survive for several days; without food, a person could last much longer.

Water is a part of every body cell. It is a large part of the body, in as much as 50 to 70 percent of one's total body weight. Body fluids, like blood, saliva, digestive juices, urine, and perspiration primarily consist of water. Water benefits the body by assisting in chemical reactions, carrying nutrients to the cells, helping remove waste products, controlling body temperature, and keeping body fluids balanced.

Water Requirements

In order for your body to maintain its body fluids and keep them healthy, it is important for you to obtain an adequate intake of water each day. Six to eight glasses of water are recommended daily as a fluid intake. This is an adequate amount to replace lost body fluids. This can come from water itself or from the foods you eat. Milk, juices, soups, and other liquids contribute to this overall total, as well as foods with a high water content, like fruits and vegetables.

Water And Weight Reduction

As mentioned earlier, water weight is often a concern in weight loss. Because your body is highly composed of water, when you aim to lose some weight, you will often lose body fluids as well, especially with restrictive weight-loss diets. But water weight is quickly regained once diet and fluid requirements are again met. Water weight is not the same as fat weight. Although numbers may change temporarily on the scale, this is not the way to reduce healthfully. In fact, too much water loss can result in dehydration, a state in which the body is too low in fluids, which can cause health problems and malfunctioning of body organs.

Vitamins, minerals, and water are all essential to health and wellbeing. You can see how each of these nutrients contributes in its own way to the inner workings of the body. Without the required amounts, the body cannot function properly. Whether you are aiming to maintain or lose weight, all of these nutrients are vital to your success. Keep this in mind as you plan your daily meals and snacks.

For best control of your body fluids, respond to your thirst. Drink water when you're thirsty. It is refreshing, and it's the healthiest fluid replacement for your body.
