The Health Benefits

Research does show a connection between vegetarianism and health. Risk of diseases like heart disease, hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, obesity, and some types of cancers are reduced, as well as problems associated with kidney stones and gallstones. Food choices for these people could contribute to these declines, but other factors, including genetics, physical activity, and not smoking, all have an impact as well.

People who choose to follow a vegetarian lifestyle are known to have the following benefits.
  • A lower incidence of chronic disease.
  • Less total fat and saturated fat in the diet.
  • Receive greater benefits from plant-based foods (antioxidants and phytonutrients).
  • Lower cholesterol levels.
  • Lower incidence of high blood pressure.
  • Reduced incidence of various types of cancers including lung, colon, and breast.
  • Fewer incidence and complications from type 11 diabetes.

But just choosing to be a vegetarian and going vegetarian don't guarantee a healthy life and reduced risk of disease. This type of diet, along with a good sense of nutrition knowledge, is important. Proper planning of meals and snacks is just as important as it is with other dietary patterns, regardless of the type of diet you choose.

With the exception of those who follow vegan vegetarian diets, most vegetarians have no difficulties obtaining adequate protein in their diets.
