Many people assume that going
vegetarian means following a healthier lifestyle, maybe even one that
can help with weight loss. Not necessarily so. Fat can be a problem
for vegetarians just as it can be a problem for nonvegetarians. Many
vegetarians opt for sources of protein like cheese, soy products,
nuts, and seeds, but they do so without noticing the amount of fat
some of these products contain. Recommendations regarding fat remain the same for vegetarians and nonvegetarians alike. Keeping fat intake to less than 30 percent of total calories is suggested, along with including low-fat choices of dairy products, including milk, cheese, cottage cheese, and yogurt. Also, keep a watchful eye on extras like margarine, oils, cream, sour cream, and sauces that may be added to foods. These extras can add more fat than you might realize. |
