Microwave Covers |

Paper can be used in the microwave for short cooking times and is
often used as a cover. Wax paper, paper towels, and plastic wrap are
all common microwave covers. Of course, some microwave cookware comes
with its own matching covers. Plastic wrap forms a tight
cover that keeps in moisture. Use only those wraps labeled "for
microwave use" since other brands may become distorted from the heat
that develops in the food during cooking. Remember to fold back a
corner of the plastic wrap when covering the dish to allow excess steam
to escape, a technique we refer to as venting. If a recipe requires
that you cover a dish tightly with plastic wrap, however, you will need
to pierce the plastic with a knife before removing it. Then carefully
remove the plastic in a direction away from you to avoid a steam bum. Microwavable paper towels absorb
moisture, allow steam to escape, and reduce spattering. Avoid printed
and recycled paper because it may contain impurities; in addition, dyes
and inks may leak into the food. Covering a dish with wax paper holds in heat, speeds
the cooking process, and prevents the food from spattering onto the
oven walls. |
