There is no need to buy a whole new set of
cookware —chances are that some of the cookware you already own can
be used in the microwave oven. Today there are utensils that can be
used in both conventional and microwave ovens. In general, ovenproof
glass, ceramic, and pottery dishes that have no metallic trim are
microwavable, and some types of cookware can even go from freezer to
microwave to table. However, plastic margarine containers and similar
types of plastic storage containers are not intended to withstand the
high temperatures of the microwave and should not be used. In fact,
plastic containers should not be used at all unless recommended by
the manufacturer. It's a good idea to test the cookware you already own to see if it
is safe to use in the microwave. To do this, place the utensil in the
oven along with — but not touching —a 1-cup glass measure filled with
1h cup of cool water. (The water absorbs microwaves and
prevents damage to your oven.) Microwave on High (IWI,) for 1 minute.
The utensil should be cool or slightly warm to the touch. If it is hot,
it is not safe for use in the microwave. |
